KARONGI – Survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Karongi district have been encouraged to try and ignore the past and embrace the fact that life must still go on.

The call was made in Rugabano Sector after ‘walk to remember’ that was staged by victims of the tragedy as the nation officially concluded the commemoration week on Tuesday.

Domina Mukakabera, the president of the umbrella organization for survivors, IBUKA said, "The loss we incurred 16 years ago does not mean that life stops at that, it must go on against all odds because we are obliged to stand in for our dear ones who died.”

Mukakabera encouraged mourners to stand by the survivors who are often hit with trauma as a result of their distorted history.

On his part, Bernard Kayumba, the district Mayor urged the locals to work hand in hand in order to positively contribute to the ongoing transformation process.
