Following the national ban of polythene bags in 2006, SOGEM received $180,000 (Rwf102.4m) from GroFin Rwanda to execute its business plan that would serve wholesalers and retailers with appropriate means of packaging their goods.

Following the national ban of polythene bags in 2006, SOGEM received $180,000 (Rwf102.4m) from GroFin Rwanda to execute its business plan that would serve wholesalers and retailers with appropriate means of packaging their goods.
SOGEM’s proprietor, Fabrice Shema Ngoga, said that they intent to shift technology from semi-manual machines to automated ones that will increase output and quality.
"GroFin worked with us to improve the business plan, financial reporting, competition analysis, cost management, establishment of distribution systems and quality control,” Ngoga said.
With 130 employees, SOGEM has managed to supply wholesalers, supermarkets, Pharmacies and big shops all over the country.
Rwanda is one of the countries focused on curbing the harmful consequences of polythene, especially the dangers posed to the environment.
