Rwanda has moved up 20 places in the latest Coca-Cola Fifa rankings from 119 to 99 but Uganda remains the highest placed in the Cecafa region at 76 from 94.
However, the top 21 places remain unchanged from last month’s rankings with Argentina still ahead of Brazil, Italy, Spain and German. England is 12th while Nigeria remain the highest ranked African side at 20.
When last month’s rankings were released with Rwanda sitting in 119 position, it all looked doom for the Wasps and critics feared for the worst but after scoring 74 points in November, the picture looks a lot brighter for December. But still 99 is not the highest Rwanda has been, nonetheless, if things continue taking the direction in which they are, it won’t be long before that 86 place from February 2004 is bettered.
Meanwhile, Uganda becomes the highest ranked country from the Cecafa region having moved 18 places from 94 to 76.
That placing puts Uganda ahead of South Africa and Sudan, the only country from this region that qualified Africa Nations’ Cup that gets underway next month in Accra, Ghana.
Argentina ended the year 2007 at the top of the world rankings that were released on Monday, winning Fifa's team of the year in the process. Argentina leads the world with 1,523 points, followed by Brazil (1,502) and world champion Italy (1,498).
In another development, Rwanda’s assistant referee Celestin Ntagungira a.k.a Abega has been listed among the 32 referee going to officiate at CAN Ghana2008.
Caf has named 16 centre referees and 16 assistant referees.
Uganda’s Muhmed Ssegonga is the only centre referee from the Cecafa region, which also two other assistant referees; Angesom Ogbamariam (Eritrea) and Desire Gahungu (Burundi).
