NYARUGURU – Residents of Nyaruguru district mostly Genocide survivors have hailed some Burundian soldiers for their efforts in saving lives of some Rwandans during the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.

During the 16th commemoration of Genocide on Wednesday, survivors revealed that some Burundian soldiers, who were on the shores of Akanyaru River during the massacres, did their best to help Tutsi who were being hunted down.

The commemoration activities in the district started on the shores of Akanyaru River, where district authorities and residents paid their tribute to those who lost their lives.

"As survivors in the district, we thank some of the Burundian soldiers who helped many of us to escape to Burundi during that difficult moment when our lives were threatened,” said Alexandre Nyirinkindi.

Reflecting on the theme of the 16th commemoration of the 1994 genocide against Tutsi, the Southern Province Executive Secretary, Jeanne Uzabiriza, observed that trauma is not a problem faced by Genocide survivors alone.

"The 1994 tragedy that befell this country has not only affected survivors but also those who committed genocide and their families. There are some children who are traumatised by what their parents did during the Genocide,” said Uzabiriza.

In the 100 days of commemoration, district authorities and residents have pledged to give their contribution to support survivors so that they can rebuild their lives.
