KIREHE – A genocide memorial site based in Kirehe sector is set to get a major face lift expected to cost over Rwf 5 million.

According to the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Bernadette Kamungu, who doubles as the head of the task force to renovate the memorial, the paper work is completed and all is set to mobilize the contractor.

"We have so far mobilised Rwf 3 million that can help us kick start the renovation. However we call for more support to enable us attain our objectives,’ she said.

Sylvestre Uwitonze officer in charge of good governance in the district said that the population has been mobilised enough, to offer more support in the formal of physical manpower where necessary.

He said that there are other sites that need such renovations, but Kirehe was given the priority because it is the worst affected.

The secretary of Ibuka association in Kirehe sector Madaleine Mukarukaka said the move was long overdue.
"It is quite disturbing to see this site left to its current state. It is thus very reassuring to be informed by authorities that rehabilitation works is due,” she said.

Kirehe Genocide Memorial that is located in the heart of the district’s main town of Nyakarambi has remains of over 8,000 victims who lost their lives during the 1994 Genocide.
