KARONGI – As part of the commemoration period that kicks off tomorrow (Wednesday), remains of 176 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in the two districts of Rutsiro and Karongi are set to be accorded  a decent reburial.

Rutsiro has reported   that 136 victims will be accorded a reburial while Karongi will bury 30. However sources say that immediately after the closure of Gacaca in both districts, availed information lead to the discovery of more remains.

Another 77 remains were earlier this year accorded decent burial in Ngororero district.

According to Agnes Mukantabana, the head of the umbrella group for the survivor organizations (Ibuka) in Karongi district, burial could be pushed forward because of the current state of memorial sites.

"The state of most of our memorial sites may not allow us to concurrently carry out burial during the commemoration week,” Mukantabana told The New Times.

Meanwhile in Ngororero district commemoration is set to end on 16th April and not 13th as it is the case.

Sources close to the commemoration activities say that it is in Nyange sector (Ngororero) that over 2,000 Christians, who had gathered in a church, were on 16th April 1994 abandoned by their leaders and left in the hands of killers.
