NORTHERN PROVINCE

MUSANZE — The minister of state for education Joseph Murekeraho has issued a stern warning to teachers involved in spreading genocide ideology.

He called upon teachers to quickly intervene in curbing down divisionism among students in all schools.

Murekeraho together with governor Boniface Rucagu castigated teachers for failing to use their role-model status in society to bring unity among the youth.

He was recently closing a four-day seminar for over 200 head teachers from 75 schools held in Musanze district.

"Why is it that peace building has failed to take root among the students you lead?’’ the minister asked.

The minister warned that whoever shall be implicated in genocide related ideology will not only be persecuted but would be dismissed from teaching and any other profession in the country.

The head teachers were challenged to remain vigilant on students’ and teachers’ conduct in order to identify and report wrong elements in schools.

Rucagu noted that genocide ideology begins from homes ‘around fire’ before it spreads to schools and called for a clear understanding of the root causes.

He said the youth would be instrumental in promoting tolerance, unity and reconciliation.

The meeting follows the recent parliamentary committee report that revealed prevalence of strong Genocide ideology among schools in the province with ACED- Mataba in Gakenke district cited as one of the schools toping the list.
