The heavy downpour that hit several parts of Kigali City last month left at least 13 people dead, according to the city security report.

The report, unveiled last Wednesday during the city monthly security meeting held at Rwanda Village in Remera, showed that 12 of the victims were washed away by River Nyabarongo that flows through Gasabo District.

Another person was killed by a falling wall in Gahanga, Kicukiro district when the house they were in was destroyed by the rains.

City Mayor, Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, who presided over the meeting, told the Mayors of Gasabo, Kicukiro and Nyarugenge to identify bridges whose conditions are a threat to users.

"That report should be availed within a week so that the city can help where the district and its residents cannot,” Kirabo said.

This follows a report from the national police which revealed that there are some bridges in several parts of the city on the verge of collapsing.
