NYAGATARE – Motor cycle taxi operators in Nyagatare district have been advised to work under a union if they are to attain sustainable development.

The call was made on Thursday, by the Nyagatare district vice mayor in charge of economic affairs, Enock Byabashaija, during a meeting with motorcyclists in Nyagatare sector.

Byabashaija told participants that the country’s vision focuses on helping local community to form organized groups such as unions or cooperatives in order to attain sustainable development.

‘A cooperative is one of those best modes of having strength in numbers which can ultimately assist the people to attain development while transforming their livelihoods,’ he said.

The meeting was called after it emerged that membership of the union had fragmented into smaller units after all edged cases of embezzlement of funds.

‘A union member pays Rwf100, 000 as entry fee and a daily Rwf300 for cooperative fund every day. But when you approach the management to help you secure a loan they claim that all the money is on main cooperative account,’ Frank Rusanganwa, one of the cooperative members said.

For the last three months, the Nyagatare Union had been dogged by acts of fragmentation and defection.
