NYAGATARE – Local leaders in Nyagatare district were on Thursday trained on the newly enacted labour law.

The one day training that was organized by the Ministry of labour was called to explain to participants why the new law was enacted while highlighting its role on the development of women and its implementation.

The training attracted members from both public and private sectors at local levels in the district.

Speaking to The New Times in a separate interview, Paul Rusanganwa, an official in the Ministry of labour in charge of laws in the labour department, said that the 2001 labour law No.51/2001 was changed to congregate the new labour law with the national constitution.

Participants were told that the new law will also promote investment into the country as well as creating room for additional job creation in line with the country’s current economic objectives.

Rusanganwa further said that the newly enacted law will increase the length of working hours. Julienne Ngutegure, one of the participants from CARITAS Rwanda in the district said the law is timely especially as it addresses the issue of maternity leave for mothers.

‘The law has changed many things positively especially on the rights of women. It is good that this time mothers will have more  rights  within the labour market,’ she said.
