Following a recent crackdown on several cooperatives, the prosecution has announced that members of more than 60 other cooperatives have requested for an audit of their records. 

The requests were made via a hotline established by the Prosecutor General’s office.

The Office of the Prosecutor, in conjunction with Rwanda Cooperative Agency, will begin the audit next week.

According to the Deputy Prosecutor General, Alphonse Hitiyaremye, people from various districts called the hotline, 3677, claiming to have been cheated by their cooperatives.

"We are now going to verify their claims and whoever is found culpable will be held accountable just like we have done with other cooperatives,” Hitiyaremye said.

At least 19 cooperatives have been investigated following the recent crackdown that saw 60 former managers and members who reportedly swindled funds brought to book.

Only 47 people have managed to pay back what they owed their respective cooperatives while 13 are still in detention.

Over Rwf 12 million have been recovered during the process, however, over Rwf40 million is still missing.
