First of all, I want to take this opportunity to wish my Christian brothers and sisters a wonderful Easter Weekend. Having said that I will not be in church to celebrate the ‘resurrection’ of Jesus of Nazareth on Sunday. Why? Because it doesn’t make sense to me.
The message of Easter is that Jesus died, and after three days, he rose from the dead like a phoenix and then spent about forty days hanging around with his disciples before ascending to heaven while they watched him. If that is what actually happened, then glory be! However, I’m rather sceptical.
Do you know how many religions exist in the world today? Hundreds probably. And the thing is, each of their adherents believe that they are right. I’m sure if a Moslem and a Sikh had a conversation about the ‘god’ they worship, the debate would last all day…and night. Ditto a Catholic and a Buddhist.
I would think that if there was a God we’d have the good graces to appear to one and all, and say "look guys, I am God, this is how I want to be worshipped”. What makes it even stranger is that each and every religious person will point out a passage in a ‘holy book’ that ‘proves’ that God exists and that He wants us to worship him in a particular way.
Whenever someone asks me whether I’m religious, I give them the same answer. I’m not. When they look at me like I’ve done something terrible I tell them that I’m not an atheist. If I was a religious leader, my church would be called the ‘Church of I Don’t Know’.
In this church, I would not preach about me knowing ‘the way, the truth and the life’. I wouldn’t preach about the divine mission of jihad to convert the Kaffirs. My philosophy would be, if there is a God out there He will let us know in His own time.
I cannot totally discount my atheist brethren as well. I’m sure they have good points as well. However, they are just as smug and arrogant as the religious people if they can, without a sense of humility, say that "there is no GOD”! How can they possibly know that?
So, unlike my colleague, I shall not try to prove or disapprove God’s existence. I shall merely sit on the fence and say this. "God, if you do exist, I’m here; talk to me”. "If you don’t, then I’ll live my life the best way I can”. Happy Easter once again.
