OVER 4000 athletes are expected to run in this year’s Kigali International Peace Marathon scheduled for May 23.
Unlike in previous editions, this year’s half (21km) and full (42km) marathons will be preceded with a 5km Run for Fun race.

According to Florent Rwigema, one of the event organizers, the annual race is expected to cost Rwf80m.

"The budget is in the region of Rwf80m and we already expect sponsorship from the Ministry of Sports and Culture, the National Olympics Committee, Soroptimist international, world running and several local companies,” the official said.

Rwigema also says that interested athletes can register on the event website (www.kigalimarathon.com).

Last year, Kenya’s Tabut Benjamin Kipkosgei clocked 2 hours, 21 minutes and 38 seconds to win the full marathon while Bryton Banuelia of Tanzania set a new record in the women fray after clocking 2 hours, 47minutes and 49 seconds.

The theme for this year is ‘Tolerance and Development’.
