NYAMASHEKE – Landslides triggered by heavy rains on Monday night killed two people and left 17 families homeless in Sangi sector, Nyamasheke district, authorities confirmed.

The Sangi Sector Executive Secretary, Emme Fabien Kamali, identified the dead only as Sarah, 70, and her 11- year old grand daughter only identified as Odette- who were residing along a hill in Ruhokwa village.

Kamali added that the displaced people first took refuge in an Anglican Church on Tuesday and Wednesday, before the Rwanda Red Cross and the district gave them plastic sheeting to construct temporary shelter.

"We call upon charitable organisations to help in resettling these people, all their property was destroyed so it calls for a new beginning,” said Kamali.
