RWAMAGANA – Drama unfolded at Zion Temple Church, Rwamagana, on Saturday, when Police arrested a bridegroom shortly after his wedding ceremony.

No sooner had the groom, only identified as Gatete stepped outside the church doors, than the police pounced on him, ruining his hopes of having a romantic evening.

He is currently being held at Rwamagana Police Station. The bride was left standing alone to the bewilderment of the wedding party. 

According to police sources, Gatete, had evaded arrest for his role in the Genocide in Muyumbo sector, Rwamagana district.

A Gacaca court in the area had sentenced him to 19 years in absentia. Consequently,  an arrest warrant had been issued against him.  

"The man evaded Gacaca courts but remained in neighbouring communities monitoring the situation. He shifted from his village thinking that he couldn’t be traced.

Today, the long arm of the law has caught up with him,” security officers said. 

Richard Mutabaruka, an eye witness narrated that at the wedding ceremony the pastor and Christian flock, had praised Jesus ‘for cleansing the bride’ to pave way for her marriage while police in plain clothes  waited patiently. 

It also emerged that the bride has so far had three unsuccessful marriage ceremonies before. Other sources, said the pastor who declared the pair husband and wife, had been warned against wedding the couple, but he went ahead with the ceremony.

"The bride too, knew about the bridegroom’s criminal history, but refused to back out of the marriage, until she was humiliated,” said Bosco Ntaganira.
