KIGALI - The cabinet has approved a request from the UN to contribute prison wardens to the quake devastated Caribbean nation of Haiti.

According to the Commissioner General of the National Prisons Services, Mary Gahonzire, the four senior prison wardens will be sent in the first phase.    

The cabinet’s decision follows a UN Security Council resolution to the enlarge United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), requesting member nations to send prisons personnel.

Rwanda currently has 10 police personnel serving in Haiti.
"For the start, we will be sending four prison wardens who are professionals in different fields,” Gahonzire said. "It’s evident that Rwanda has been performing well in the UN fields and this is why the demand for Rwandan personnel is increasing.”

Gahonzire said that Rwanda will send more prison wardens with time and that first phase was for the managers.
