NYAGATARE - Residents of Nyagatare district were on Saturday cautioned against illegal possession and use of small arms in the country.

Speaking in Nyagatare sector, Asst. Commissioner of Police, Vianney Nshimiyimana, who is the coordinator of the department charged with the fight against the illegal use and possession of small arms, said people found in possession of small arms risk five years imprisonment under the newly enacted law.

‘The law against the illegal use and possession of small arms has been passed and it will be effective in June this year,’ he told residents who had gathered at KIST’s CITT branch in Nyagatare district.

‘It stipulates a minimum punishment of 5 years imprisonment for those found culpable. You should report to Police or any other security organ before June when this law becomes effective.’

He noted that illegal possession of small arms poses a security threat in different countries and urged residents to volunteer information which can lead to recovery of such arms.
