KARONGI - The Western Province has been chosen to host for the first time the National Taxpayers’ Day slated for June 12. The event, will either take place at the provincial headquarters in Karongi or in Rusizi district.

This will be the 9th Taxpayers Day and will be held under the theme ‘Advocating for good governance at all levels in order to enhance tax compliance.’

According to RRA’s Commissioner for quality assurance, Peter Ruyumbu, the day will be marked with awards given to some of the best taxpayers in the country.

He said this last week during a consultative meeting with provincial local leaders in which he advised taxpayers against evading taxes.

He further noted that the tax body is committed to building the capacity of those who contribute to the country’s development.  Celestin Kabahizi, the provincial governor, who chaired the meeting, called upon residents to work hard while striving to pay taxes on time, which would ultimately help the government minimize aid dependency.

"Our contribution (Western province) to the national budget is progressively improving. We need to exceptionally work hard and support the country in its quest out of aid dependency,” Kabahizi said.
