HUYE - The Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Rose Mukantabana, has urged residents of Huye district to be more active in community work, stressing that the country’s development depends on their efforts.

The Speaker made the remarks last Saturday as she joined residents of Kigoma Sector in the monthly community work locally known as Umuganda which was also attended by Prime Minister, Bernard Makuza.

Together with residents of Kabuga cell, the legislators cleared clogged water channels and planted coffee trees on a 2.5-hectare piece of land.

Addressing residents after the exercise, Mukantabana explained that MPs and other government leaders join locals in the community work because they want to see for themselves the challenges the residents are faced with and work together to find solutions.

"We have to work together as Rwandans and think about how to develop our country without waiting for support from donors. This will only be achieved if we work together as a team,” she said.

She reminded districts residents of the need for reconciliation and the eradication of genocide ideology especially as the 16th commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi approaches.

Also in attendance were top government and security officials who included Provincial Governor, Fidele Ndayisaba, the commander of the RDF 4th Division, Brig Gen Mubarak Muganga, the Regional Police Commander Supt Faustin Ntirushwa, among others.

The district is the ninth to be visited by members of Parliament in the monthly community work exercise that will see them tour all the 30 districts of the country.
