GISOZI - The Kigali Independent University (ULK), yesterday held its sixth graduation ceremony where it awarded degrees to a total of 1, 420 students in different disciplines.

The students were awarded Bachelors Degrees in Economics, Management, Law, Sociology, Administrative Sciences, and Population Studies.

Females constituted 60.2 percent of the grandaunts.
Speaking at the ceremony, the rector of ULK, Dr. Alphonse Ngagi, said that the university was happy that it is tremendously contributing to the development of the country.

"The aim of ULK is to produce people who are able to research on the problems that are pressing our country without forgetting the region,” Ngagi said.

He also highlighted that the university, through its founders, has shown a lot of passion in developing the country through education.

Here he mentioned ‘Rwigamba Balinda’ foundation through which a total of 1, 807 students and have benefited as an example. He said that another 48 lecturers have also completed their Masters degrees abroad courtesy of the foundation.

The foundation was initiated by Prof. Balinda Rwigamba, the founder and president of ULK, to help needy students access higher education.

In his speech, the vice chairman of the board of Directors Prof. Kalisa Mbanda said that Rwanda needs disciplined professionals.

"For Rwanda to develop, it needs to produce professionals who have self-discipline because imparting knowledge without consciousness would be a waste of time and that is why ULK has joined other higher institutions of learning to accomplish that objective,” Kalisa remarked.

He urged the graduates to be exemplary and work with fellow Rwandans in all programs that are aimed at building and developing the country.

Prof. Balinda Rwigamba advised the graduates to be the stewards of development in their respective communities and said that the only way they can be able to help was by doing everything with a loving heart to the people of Rwanda.
