RUSIZI — Police in Kamembe last weekend arrested a student of Universite Libre de Kigali [ULK] over Genocide ideology and uttering ethnic remarks.

Nicolas Ndayisabye, 24, a second-year management student was apprehended at around 5:34 am on Saturday December 15.

Ndayisabye was reportedly arrested after hauling insulting ethnic remarks to police.

The police had allegedly sought to arrest his elder brother Valens Twagirayezu, 26, over rape charges at their home. They were later both arrested.

"We decided to apprehend Ndayisabye because he insulted and attacked us with ethnic remarks that Hutus are always harassed by Tutsis especially on Gacaca days.

He said that these days Tutsis and Hutus are not on good terms; something which shows that he harbors Genocide and ethnic ideologies,” said Police.

Police added that Ndayisabye also incited their neighbors to fight them [police] saying that Police constables were rebels and always harassed residents particularly Hutus. 

 Ndayisabye’s parents are also said to be facing Genocide charges according to their neighbors.

However, at the police post, Ndayisabye acknowledged insulting police but denied ideological charges.

 "I agree that I made a mistake of abusing and confronting police authorities but sincerely speaking I don’t hold anything related to Genocide ideology and racial divisionism.

I am asking for forgiveness for my actions.”
