Survey results have revealed that half the girls in school miss classes as a result of lack of sanitary towels, and several activists are advocating for the removal of taxes on the items.

Many took to the streets on Friday to put the message across.  This move is important, since they would be affordable to girls and women of all walks of life.

This would be a welcome development for school girls who have to miss classes as a result of lack of the towels due to prohibitive prices.

Rwanda has registered tremendous progress in the education of the girl-child. And the commitment of the government in ensuring that nothing impedes the education of girls in this particular case, is reflected in the words of the Minister of Culture and Sports, Joseph Habineza, who pledged support to the cause during the march.

There is a need for continuous sensitisation of girls on what could prevent them from fulfilling their education aspirations.

Concerted efforts should continue to remove all barriers to girl education to ensure, not only gender equality, but also guarantee their full participation in the development of the country.
