A probe commissioned by the Office of the Prosecutor General, has led to the arrests of 14 people from several cooperatives in the country, for alleged embezzlement of funds from these cooperatives they headed.
"So far we have recovered Frw 5,447,299 embezzled from seven cooperatives,” said Prosecution Spokesman Augustine Nkusi.
The arrests follow a recent audit that unearthed a whooping Rwf 889m and US$65,000 embezzled by either leaders or members of 20 cooperatives.
The special probe unit was formed a fortnight ago and it is headed by the Deputy Prosecutor General, Alphonse Hitiyaremye.
According to Nkusi, the suspects are currently detained at various police stations and will be arraigned before court soon.
Some of the cooperatives under investigation include, Kopakabi (Rwamagana), Codace(Nyarugenge), Kirebe Kamate Zirakamwa(KKZ) (Nyagatare), Cavecuvi (Rusizi), Pfunda Tea Farmers’/SACCO (Rubavu) and Isange in Rulindo district.
