HUYE – The Minister of State for Energy and Water, Coletha Uwineza Ruhamya, has urged residents of the Huye district to put the water infrastructure that has been made available to them to good use.

The Minister made the call on Thursday while presiding over the inauguration ceremony of an Rwf 138 million water project funded by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to benefit residents of the Ruhashya and Mbazi sectors.

She stressed the importance of using clean water, saying that it will cut down on waterborne diseases among residents.

"Access to clean water cuts down on the budget spent on procuring drugs to treat waterborne diseases, and taking good care of the water infrastructure leads to healthier lives,” she said.

Jean Baptiste Kanyarurindo, one of the beneficiaries, told The New Times that the new water infrastructure had cut down on the long distance residents used to trek to get water.

"This is a dream come true,” said Kanyarurindo. "We are very happy because we have been dreaming of accessing clean water for years, and we will no longer have to travel long distances thanks to the new water infrastructure.”

The project was made possible through the collaboration of residents of the Mbazi and Ruhashya sectors, the water and electricity utility company, and RECO -RWASCO in conjunction with the ICRC.
