NGORORERO – A man who attempted to torch a forest in Ngororero district was on Tuesday fined Rwf50,000 by local authorities in Nyange sector, before being released.

Denis Kubwimana, tried to set the forest ablaze on Tuesday night, but he was apprehended by residents who immediately put out the fire.

The Nyange sector Executive Secretary, Innocent Mbajimbere, said Kubwimana’s intention was to burn the forest cover and plant grass for his cows.

"It is by stroke of luck that we came in after minimal damage had been inflicted on the forest. Consequently a minimal fine was imposed because he confessed and asked for forgiveness,” Mbajimbere said.

He called on the public to jointly work with the local leadership and security organs in order to ensure that such wrong doers do not go unpunished.
