Rwanda has the potential to produce more than 36,000 tons of glass annually, a study by Rwanda Geology and Mines Authority (OGMR)) has indicated.

The study indicates that several areas in the country have good types of sands that can be used to produce quality glass.

"We are actually going to carry another study that will give a more detailed picture of the glass manufacturing project. All we have is an estimate,” Hildeerand Kanzira,  director of research at OGMR said.

"We have good types of sands and granite stones which would produce fine qualities of glass,” the report reads in part.

Two main sites so far registered in the country are Mukungwa-Musangano, Northern Province and Karundura in Western Province.

Others are along rivers such as Nyabarongo, Mugina (Southern Province), Sebeya, Nkora, Kilimbi in Western Province

Karundura for instance, can produce 730,000m3 (985,000 tons).
