NYARUGENGE - The Nyarugenge Intermediate Court yesterday ruled that Deo Mushayidi cannot be granted bail because the charges against him are related to terrorism and he committed them maliciously.

Mushayidi is facing six charges that include, causing state insecurity, working with a terrorist organization and uttering false documents.

The prosecution also accuses Mushayidi of genocide ideology promoting genocide revisionism, and sowing seeds of division.

Mushayidi had on Thursday applied for bail but the prosecution protested, arguing that he might escape.

Judge Yvette Uwantage said charges against Mushayidi were serious and the accused had admitted some of the crimes leveled against him.

Uwantage ruled that the charges against Mushayidi were serious and went along with the prosecution’s request.  

On Thursday, Mushayidi admitted in court that he had been using false documents and collaborated with a terrorist group, FDLR (Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda) remnants of ex-FAR and Interahamwe militia responsible for the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

"This court has directed that Mushayidi be taken to Kigali Central Prison where he shall be kept for 30 days,” Uwantage ruled.

Mushayidi first appeared in Nyarugenge Intermediate Court on Thursday following his arrest in Burundi and subsequent extradition on March 5.

He has been linked by the government to exiled military officers; Kayumba Nyamwasa and Patrick Karegyeya, said to be behind recent grenade attacks in the country.

Mushayidi had been moving between countries in the region for the past year trying to set up a network for his armed group, PDP-Imanzi.
