Two stories in yesterday’s edition of The New Times caught my eye. The first was "600 casual workers strike in Gicumbi” and "130 Atraco employees go on strike”. Each of these stories deals with employers failing to pay their employees their wages.

I don’t understand why someone hires employees when they can’t pay them? Is it because they know that they will not get sued? In other countries, situations like these are dealt in two ways.

Either they cut the work force (it is called ‘being laid off”) or there are negotiation between the employer and employees, where they come to an agreement.

Why in the world would either someone fail to pay their employees for three months plus? That is irresponsible. These workers have to pay rent, buy food and cater for their families.  Not paying their wages is unethical.
