Mobile operator Tigo Rwanda has announced a new promotional package for its customers, slashing call tariffs by 88.9 percent from Rwf90 to Rwf10 per minute.

The promotion, which is considered the biggest in the company’s first year of operation, could last for six months. It is only applicable on Tigo to Tigo calls.

Alongside the price cuts, Tigo has also significantly trimmed prices on Short Message Services (SMS) by 95 percent from Rwf20 to Rwf1 as it competes for market share with Rwandatel and MTN Rwanda. Company officials said yesterday that the telecom firm has already obtained five percent of the local market share.

Marcelo Aleman, Tigo’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) said yesterday.

Aleman says that their market penetration is moving at a good pace and that it reflects a good beginning for future telecom business in the country.

He said that as competition in the telecom business continues to intensify, consumers will have a wide rage of choices and favorable services.

The company said it is also trying to cut its operating costs.

Recently, Tigo increased talking-time on the 300 airtime voucher card from three minutes to 30 minutes, targeting students and low income earners in a promotion that will last a month.
