A senior administrator at Gitega Health Centre in Nyarugenge District, has revealed that the centre is on a verge of crisis due to lack of sufficient medical personal and limited space compared to the number of patients they receive.

In an interview with The New Times, Mukamfizi Theresie, said that with only 21 nurses, the health centre is overwhelmed.

"We receive about 180 to 300 patients in a day and these outnumber the medical personnel that we have here,” Mukamfizi said. "We only have one doctor, who also comes thrice a week and in most cases he is handling HIV/AIDS patients.”

Some of the patients who spoke to The New Times, said they have to wait for long to get someone attend to them.
"All we do is wait for the nurses to attend to us, but they take long, so sometimes some of us just turn and go back home without help,” said one of the patients.  

Mukamfizi revealed that despite numerous appeals to the district authorities, no help has been availed. 

"What we want is for the powers-that-be to intervene and solve these problems,” Mukamfizi pledged. "There is nothing much we can do.”
