NYAMASHEKE district emerged top during the latest performance contract evaluation carried out by authorities recently. The outcome was attributed to hard work and team spirit among staff, the Mayor, Jean Baptiste Habyarimana said.

The mayor told The New Times yesterday that the other secret behind the district’s success was initiating projects which employ a vast number of people. He added that such empowerment projects provided the best strategy to involve the local residents in the economic development of the district.

"What enabled us to emerge best from the 4th position the previous year was the cooperation at all levels of leadership within the local authorities,” Habyarimana said.

An assessment report on the Western Province released last week put Nyamasheke first with 84% followed by Rutsiro district at 82% while both Karongi and Rusizi come third tied at 80.5%.

It also emerged that Nyamasheke won  due to  its impressive infrastructure development particularly in setting up several new hotels expected to boost tourism and increase employment   opportunities for residents.
