RWAMAGANA – The Governor of Eastern Province, Dr. Ephraim Kabaija, has criticised local leaders and parents for failing to root out the persistent problem of drug and alcohol abuse in the province. 

"We have to expose and punish these people who want to hold us at ransom. Community policing committees must be vigilant in this regard. Parents too, will be held accountable if they allow minors to drink or buy alcohol,” he said. 

He was addressing the monthly provincial security meeting in Rwamagana yesterday. 

Kabaija said the security organs and police in particular must apprehend and bring to book habitual alcohol and drug abusers.

He also blamed the mayors for not doing enough to end the business of illicit alcohol in villages. 

"Issues to do with domestic violence, rape and petty theft prevailing within your localities could be attributed to lack of vigilance by local leaders. I therefore want more vigilance or else I am going to hold mayors accountable,” he added. 

Damas Muhororo, the Mayor of Kayonza district, said that they will institute measures to curb the vice.

Protais Murayira, the Mayor of Kirehe district, said, "We are more committed than ever before, to root out this problem within the shortest time possible.”
