KIGALI - Another phase for taking of photographs for the completion of the registration process to obtain the new electronic National IDs has resumed today.

This phase will be targeting those who turned sixteen years of age and those who missed out on the previous photographing exercises.

The exercise is scheduled to last one week only.
Speaking at a Town hall meeting televised live yesterday, the coordinator of the National ID project, Pascal Nyamurinda called upon all those people in the two categories to utilize the opportunity and take photos during the set period.

The exercise is also aimed at updating the national voters’ register which will be used during the presidential elections slated for August this year.

According to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Eugene Barikana, the exercise is paramount in updating the national voter’s register.

"Some people have been registered but have not yet taken photographs, and yet the new voters card will bear a photograph, so if they don’t get photographed that means that his or her voter’s card will not be complete,” he said.

Information from the National ID Project shows that 95 percent of the people who were registered have already been able to get the new IDs.

Nayamurinda clarified that the remaining five percent are those who had not yet collected their IDs. He also called upon these people to go and collect them since having the ID is an obligation for every Rwandan.

The exercise will be done at district headquarters around the country where three cameras have been stationed at each district.
