The government has advised against poor disposal of asbestos materials used for roofing. Vincent Karega, the Minister of Infrastructure (MININFRA), announced, this week, that the ministry has put together a team of experts who will monitor and advise on the removal of the asbestos roofing.

Asbestos was banned, after it was discovered that it is a health hazard that causes serious illness, including cancer.

Experts have noted that the material poses danger to human health when it is disturbed. It is classified as an occupational hazard, especially in relation to construction workers.

Therefore, the warning by the ministry against removing asbestos roofing without experts’ supervision, is aimed at curtailing the risk it poses to those involved in the removal of the materials and others within the vicinity.

A properly planned and coordinated national exercise for the removal of the material is a commendable effort, but for it to be successful, input from other sectors will be required.

It is important to bear in mind that exposure to asbestos takes long to manifest its symptoms, therefore, there is need for public sensitization about its dangers.
