GICUMBI - the National Electricity and Water Corporations (RECO-RWASCO) have connected a total of 140 households in Miyove, Gicumbi district, and Ruhunde in Burera district on the national electricity grid.

In an interview with The New Times, RECO-RWASCO Byumba station manager, Gilbert Rubayita, said the new clients were connected two weeks ago. 

"The exercise is aimed at accelerating socio-economic development in the rural areas, to achieve Rwanda’s millennium goals,” he said.

He added that his staff move to the rural sectors every Tuesday, to attend to customers’ concerns, including signing contracts with potential clients.

Rubayita also disclosed that plans are underway to extend power to other Gicumbi Sectors of Rutare, Rwamiko, Giti and Bukure.

"In addition, Kageyo Sector shall be provided with a water tank to supply water to the area residents very soon,” Rubayita said. 

Residents of Kageyo Sector have been facing water shortage for a long time, and the development comes as relief to many.

"The idea of constructing a water tank in Kageyo sector would relieve us of a water shortage problem,” said Claudine Uwera, a businesswoman at Kageyo trading centre.
