The Lower Chamber of parliament recently unanimously elected MP Alfred Gasana as the new chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Political and Legal Affairs.

Before being elected, Gasana headed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Security and National Sovereignty.

"I am interested in dealing with laws regarding governance, justice, media, NGOs and civil status,” Gasana said, while campaigning for the seat before the House.

Gasana, who stood unopposed, replaces Bernadette Kanzayire, who was recently appointed Deputy Ombudsman.

He praised members of the political committee, saying that their work has great impact on how leadership is exercised in the country.

The MP also commended his predecessor, Kanzayire, saying that he would carry on with her success story.

"I am committed to do the work perfectly and to effectively follow the laws,” Gasana said.

Out of 71 MPs that turned up for work yesterday, 67 voted for Gasana, one against while three ballots were invalid.

After the election, the Speaker, Rose Mukantabana, immediately announced that the post Gasana initially held of Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Security and National Sovereignty remains vacant.

Gasana, 42, is one of the longest serving MPs. He entered the Parliament in 2003 on the ticket of Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF).

He holds a Bachelors degree in Law (LLB).
