The bishop of Shyira diocese John Ruchahana has urged Christians to engage in all developmental activities in the country, saying hard work was an element of Christianity.

The bishop said it was through hard work that Christians fully unite with God because poverty can promote evils of jealous and hatred among Christians.

He was recently addressing Christians in Nyeigabo Anglican church where he confirmed over 85 Christians.

Ruchahana described it as sin for Christians not to follow government poverty eradication plans especially ones they can participate in.

"If you are told to practice terracing so that you can stop soil erosion in this hilly area and you don’t, you are abusing the nature,” he said.

"One day God will question you about the kilograms of soil that were washed away to neighboring countries,” he warned.

On Family planning he noted that Christians were still reluctant to produce few children yet family planning was a poverty eradication strategy.

He cited Egypt as a country which has been able to use River Nile for irrigation and said Rwandans needed to utilize the rain received to create wealth.

The newly confirmed members were also urged to deliver others to Christ and help new members of the church to grow spiritually.
