RWAMAGANA – Residents of Nyagasenyi village in Kigabiro sector of Rwamagana district were bewildered when they woke up to find one of the graves in a genocide memorial site, wide open, after collapsing last last Friday.

Dativa Musabyeyezu, the IBUKA district representative lamented the incident saying that she was doing everything possible to have the grave repaired in the shortest time possible.

She said that she has a moral obligation to undertake the renovation of the grave.

"I am talking to the local administrators so that we can have the grave repaired in a few days. We need a proper contractor so that we do not suffer the same experience again,” she said.

According to a resident identified as Victoire Habiyakare, the memorial site was built in 2003.Talking to The New Times, he said that he was surprised that it now collapsed.

Charles Kabogo, an official entrusted with the renovation of the site, said that the problem was that the contractors hired used weak iron bars and insufficient cement.

He estimates that the repairs will cost Rwf3.5 million.
The genocide memorial site, which was built by the residents with the support of the district, will be in the mean time guarded by local defence personnel until it is fully repaired, according to officials.
