After a disappointing 2-0 loss to Uganda, the Amavubi Stars routed hapless Djibouti 9-0 yesterday to book a place in the last eight of GTV/Cecafa Cup from group B.

Helsingborg star Olivier Karekezi opened the floodlights as early the tenth minute, then two minutes later defender Ahmed Dahel scored an own goal.

Roger Tuyisenge and Hegman Ngoma added the third and fourth respectively before Karekezi added his second of the afternoon and Amavubi’s fifth on the stroke of half time.

Labama Kamana Bokota scored a hat trick in the second half to take his tally at the competition to four in two games before Elias Uzamukunda scored the ninth goal.

The score line is far the biggest at this year’s championship, surpassing Uganda’s 7-0 against the same side last Sunday.

Rwanda, one-time winners of the competition went on second position of Group B with six points and a place in the quarterfinal.

Amavubi stars started strongly and managed to pitch camp in the Djibouti territory for most part of the one-sided game.

For finishing second in the group, Josip Kuze’s side will meet the winner of group C, which has Sudan, Ethiopia and Zanzibar.

Elsewhere yesterday Zanzibar stunned the holders, Ethiopia 3-1 to move to four points from two games and they are likely to be Rwanda’s opponent in the quarterfinal. Zanzibar also drew 2-2 with Sudan in their first game. Sudan and Ethiopia battle on Saturday to decide who tops the group.

Uganda was the first team from Group B to qualify following their 2-0 victory over Rwanda on Tuesday. The tournament continues today with matches pitting the Cranes against Eritrea while Kenya will also be hoping for maximum points against Somalia.
