NYAGATARE - A man wielding a machete attacked a family in Tabagwe sector, Nyagatare district on Sunday, injuring two children and their mother, authorities confirmed yesterday.

The victim s were identified as Sandrine Niyonsenga, 6, Aline Niyogisubizo, 2, and Josephine Niyonsenga, their mother.

When The New Times visited to the scene, residents were still in shock discussing the attempted murder.

‘It’s beyond our understanding. We are still traumatised. We are not sure whether this ruthless killer will not come back and kill us,’ a shocked resident said.

Area residents said Silvestre Ntibaseka, 24, attacked Niyonsaba’s home early in the morning.

"He woke up in the morning with a machete, followed by his wife and his young brother. He immediately attacked Niyonsenga and cut her in the back. He retreated a bit before returning to stab her two children,” Jean Bosco Basekanyi, one of the residents said.

Speaking from Nyagatare Hospital, Niyonsenga said that the suspect attacked them because he believed she had bewitching his son.

‘He always accused me of being behind the death of his son. He threatened to kill me,’ she said.
The suspect is currently detained at Nyagatare Police Post.
