KAMONYI - The Mayor of Kamonyi district, Jacques Rutsinga, has commended AVSI Foundation for its contribution towards poverty eradication and promoting vocational skills in the district.

Rutsinga made the remarks on Friday, while inspecting activities of CPJSP Vocational centre, which is supported by the AVSI Foundation, an international organisation.

The centre recently received carpentry equipment worth Rwf8.5 m in a bid to improve the quality of vocational skills.

"The centre is very important because it equips youths with life skills which will enable them to compete and succeed in life. The district will provide market and advocacy in order to attain its vision of empowering poor and vulnerable students,” Rutsinga said.

He recommended that civic education be added to the centre’s syllabus in order to promote good governance and leadership skills for the future generation.

At least 65 needy students from Kamonyi, Ruhango, Gatsibo and Nyanza districts are currently undergoing vocational training in tailoring, carpentry, wood works and languages.

Lorette Birara, an AVSI official, re-affirmed continued support to the centre, stressing that each of the students will be supported to compete favourably on the job market.

AVSI, an Italian non-governmental organisation, supports over 3,500 youths countrywide with complete education facilities, health insurance and psycho social assistance.
