In a move to encourage residents who live on the slopes of Rubavu hill to relocate, the Governor of the Western Province, Celestin Kabahizi, has donated 2,250 iron sheets to the 50 most vulnerable families.
Since the beginning of 2009 when heavy rains caused a landslide on the hill resulting in the deaths of three people, the district and other partner institutions like Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA, have been looking into ways of relocating the residents.
Kabahizi visited the new site where the people are to be relocated accompanied by district and security officials to identify and assess the challenges.
"I need all of you here at the site in less than two months. Go and tell others to come. Any problem they may face will be dealt with when all are here,” Kabahizi told the local leaders.
However, residents who spoke to The Sunday Times raised the concern that the new site is far from the town and the schools.
"We can’t just go there since our children are still studying, and the place is somehow far. And we can’t build while staying there,” said one Djuma.
