The national prison services have come up with a move to establish courtrooms within all the prisons country wide.

This was revealed by the Commissioner General of Prisons, Mary Gahonzire in an interview with The Sunday Times on Friday.

She disclosed that building a court facility within the prison where the inmates would be tried would create an avenue for almost all the criminal defendants, ending the need to transport them to public courts.

"This initiative will benefit the public courts since the majority of the inmates will be handled in the prisons’ courtrooms, but the court calendars will be adhered to,” she said.

"We have agreed with the president of the High Court and the prosecution and they have commended our initiative to establish courtrooms in the prisons.”

She further said that the judges will be coming to prisons to hear the cases.

Gahonzire added that so far, construction of the courtrooms has kicked off and she hopes that by June this year, they will be ready.
