In a bid to improve on the services rendered by the National Prisons Services, the department has introduced an ICT data system to improve the flow of information.  

Speaking to The New Times yesterday, the Commissioner General of Prisons, Mary Gahonzire, said that the new system will enable prisons keep proper records of inmates.

"This data system will later be connected to the courts and the prosecution in order to improve the flow of information in the entire judicial system,” she said

She added that with the introduction of ICT data system, the prison services will be in position to know all the details about the inmates.

"We have been recording the details of the prisoners on paper, but now information regarding their charges, sentences will be available in the computer,”

"This saves time since it will be easy to identify inmates’ particulars,” she noted

"Some inmates come to us complaining that they have completed their sentences yet in the real sense they had not,” Gahonzire added.

"Therefore, we shall be able to easily identify those who have completed their sentences by entering their names in the machines.”
