Uwineza Josiane also known as Miss Jojo was born on June 30, 1982 at Nyamata, in Bugesera. She grew up in Kigali, Nyamirambo with the latter years of her life living as an orphan since her dad died when she was only 6 months and her mother left her when she was 12 during the Genocide of 1994.
She studied at APE, Camp Kigali and Bujumbura in the primary studies, and St Aloys, ESP Zaza and Ste Bernadette in the secondary schools. She graduated from the National University of Rwanda with a Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature last year.
Her interest for music started when she was a kid telling her mother that she would be a singer in the future. She would dance for anyone who dared to give her their attention and impressed them. It was then that her mother noticed her talents and took her to a traditional dancing troupe called Abatangampundu. She was then only 6 years old.
From then on she worked on her talents and the rest is history. Miss Jojo is one of the pioneers of the modern Rwandan music and is regarded as the top female artist in the country. She has so far released an album called Itangiriro (Genesis) which was launched in late 2008.
Her debut album contains popular hits like ‘Tukabyine’, ‘Mbwira’ and ‘Beretirida’.
Miss Jojo is working on releasing her second album which she says will come out unique from what is currently in the market because she is developing a new style which combines the international rhythms and the Rwandan lifestyle which will be in purely Rwandan language, rhythm and context.
