The police officer who assaulted The New Times (TNT) photographer George Baryamwisaki has been thrown into a police cell.

Corporal Epimaque Kaberuka (pictured below) who beat up Baryamwisaki while on duty will be detained for one month at the Police Disciplinary Centre, Ngoma District in Eastern Province.

Central Regional Police Commander Assistant Commissioner, George Rumanzi, said that the Unit Disciplinary Committee (UDC), chaired by Chief Inspector of Police, Geoffrey Muvunyi, ordered the immediate detention of Kaberuka.

"He started serving his thirty-day detention term on Friday pending further action,” Rumanzi said yesterday.  

Kaberuka assaulted Baryamwisaki a.k.a Barya and TNT staff reporter, Ignatius Ssuuna last week when the pair had gone to cover a story of hawkers being chased off the streets in Giporoso, Remera, a Kigali City suburb.

On taking his photograph while arresting hawkers, Kaberuka pounced on Barya, handcuffed him, repeatedly slapped and kicked him as he dragged him to Remera Police Station.

Rumanzi however said that action against Kaberuka will be taken but after a thorough review of his general conduct.

 "His detention may result into change of the nature of his work or change of his place of work. It may also lead to recommendations for further training; all this will depend on our findings about his track record,” he said
