NYAGATARE – The local district authorities on Thursday launched a land registration exercise to pave way for the issuing of title deeds to land owners. 

The exercise was launched in Nyakagarama cell in Rukomo sector. Over 50,000 plots of land will be registered in Rukomo sector alone, according to officials from the Nyagatare district’s land office. 

Speaking to The New Times, the district’s land director, David Mugisha said that the exercise could take about three years to cover the whole district. 

‘This is an activity that will be carried out in a period spread over three years. We have started with the registration exercise in the first phase and later on residents will start getting their land titles,’ he said. 

Mugisha, underscored the importance land registration has in solving land disputes.

‘In this registration exercise we give both parents and children equal rights on the ownership of the land. This will effectively solve the issues of succession that have been persistent among families,’ he said. 

Residents of Rukomo sector, who spoke to The New Times, welcomed the move. 

‘I am so excited to be granted rights on our land. Our marriage broke three years ago and the man used to threaten me over land. It is a great moment in my life,’ one of the residents, Chantal Tumwesigye said.
