There has been a lot of hullabaloo, especially in the International media, about the defection of renegade Lt. Gen. Kayumba Nyamwasa.

The former Rwandan Ambassador to India has enjoyed a fair bit of airtime on radio stations, where he has thrown insults and accusations at the same system that made him.

As they continue to seduce the media networks into handing them microphones, these people must not forget that a country is far more important than one individual.

Like a football team, one player cannot determine the destiny of the club. If a player is dissatisfied with the way the club operates and decides to quit, so be it. There is no doubt that they will be replaced in a split second, and the operations of the club will go on as normal.

In the same way, Rwanda will progress inspite of malcontents. As a country, there are definitely those who wish it well and those who do not.

The well wishers will have the country’s interest at heart and will work to improve the lives of Rwandans. On the other hand, those who don’t, will stop at nothing to destroy what is being put together by those who love their country. Such selfish tendencies should not deter Rwandans from moving forward.

Looking at the progress over the last 16 years, there is no doubt that we have set our priorities right. Improvement of Health services, free education, modern farming methods, security and the development of the private sector, to mention but a few. It is by concentrating on these issues that Rwanda will be a better place to live.
