KARONGI - The president of Barcelona Football Club Foundation, Joan Laporta, yesterday toured Kiziba Refugee Camp in the Western Province, a camp that is home to close to 20,000 Congolese refugees.

The camp has hosted the refugees for the past decade.
"Barcelona is more than a football club; we best
express our identity by getting closer to the society. We feel more satisfied by creating solidarity with the vulnerable,” Laporta told the press after a 3-hour tour.

Flanked by Corporate General Director, Joan Oliver, FC Barcelona Foundation General Director, Marta Segú, and club director Magda Oranich, Laporta seemed humbled by the situation in the camp.

After touring Kiziba camp sport facility and launching a multipurpose education centre, Laporta admitted that fans are sometimes more important than players.

He thanked the Government of Rwanda for the opportunity given to them to showcase the foundation’s other projects other than football.  Barcelona Foundation supports infrastructural projects in two other refugee camps; Nyabiheke in Gatsibo district and Gihembe camp in the Northern Province.

Over 52,000 refugees in Rwanda get Barcelona’s support through this Foundation.
