RWAMAGANA - Prime Minister Bernard Makuza has called upon local leaders in the Eastern Province to push for sustainable development.

The Premier said this while addressing local leaders who gathered at the Eastern Province headquarters in Rwamagana to assess the progress in performance contracts yesterday.

"The degree in which you involve the people in development projects and solving their problems, will always determine how sustainable your projects will be,” Makuza said.

"It is evident that those who fail to deliver, are poor at mobilizing people”.

On his part, James Musoni, the Minister of Local Government, said that it is welcome that all mayors are focused on development, but they shouldn’t forget other important areas like health insurance, and house construction.

"Primary needs like health and shelter shouldn’t be forgotten. If we do so, we end up in crisis which normally gives bad results. So, be forewarned that in the next evaluation, we shall be considering all these factors,” he said.

The governor of the Province, Dr. Ephraim Kabaija, said that the evaluation made in the districts, reflects the efforts put in by respective local leaders.

Kirehe District emerged the best performer while Rwamagana was last.

He said that it is now the duty of the provincial leaders to work around the clock, to meet the set goals within a set time frame.

"Kirehe is not number one by mistake. Neither is it a gamble that Rwamagana is the last. You reap what you sow,” Kabaija said.

"However, it is the obligation of all partners to make sure that even the weak, meet the required bench mark”. 
The presentation of performance contracts was attended by several ministers and Members of Parliament.
